CHARDON, Ohio — The Geauga County Dog Warden has announced a precautionary temporary closure for the next two weeks after a stray dog at the shelter tested positive for canine distemper.

“To protect the health and safety of our animals, we are placing four dogs under a two-week observation period to monitor for any signs of infection,” according to a post from the warden on Monday.

“Canine distemper is a contagious and serious disease caused by the canine distemper virus,” according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. “The virus attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of dogs. All dogs are at risk of canine distemper. Those at particular risk include puppies younger than four months and dogs that have not been vaccinated against canine distemper virus.”

During this time, the warden’s office said they will continue to respond to complaints and fulfill all statutory obligations.

“Stray dogs will be housed at an alternative location,” according to their post.
